Most sharks in the wild live between 20 and 30 years.

Shark Week 2018, a summer tradition with real bite that begins airing on the Discovery Channel on Sunday (July 22), is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. And it’s showing no signs of being long in the tooth.

Shark Week 30th Anniversary LogoThis year’s week-long event includes brand new “jaws”-dropping episodes and an all-star lineup of athletes and celebrities — including Shaquille O’Neal, Ronda Rousey, Aaron Rodgers, Rob Gronkowski, Lindsey Vonn, Guy Fieri, and Bear Grylls — in addition to Shark Week’s team of scientists and researchers offering new insight into the world of sharks.

And VITAC once again will be on deck to caption all the action, excitement, and adrenaline rushes. Our offline and realtime teams are hard at work providing captions for more than 50 hours of “Shark Week” programs, which premiere Sunday at 7 PM EST and continue through July 29.

Opening night programming includes “Alien Sharks Greatest Hits,” which recounts the most memorable moments from the past five years of “Alien Sharks”; “Bear vs. Shark,” which sees adventurer Bear Grylls test his skills and wits against the ocean’s apex predators; “Shaq Does Shark Week,” which finds former NBA great Shaquille O’Neal overcoming his fear of sharks; and “Ronda Rousey Uncaged,” which has Olympian, WWE athlete, and UFC Hall of Famer Ronda Rousey face off against the ultimate fighter of the sea, the mako shark.

Other highlights throughout the week include “Shark Tank Meets Shark Week” (which features the hosts of “Shark Tank” deciding whose shark conservation wins $50,000, July 25); “Sharks Gone Wild” (which looks back on viral videos, news stories, and the latest cutting-edge shark science, July 28); and “Naked and Afraid of Sharks” (featuring “Naked and Afraid” all-stars surviving for 14 days exclusively on what the ocean provides, July 29).

Each night of programs wraps up with “Shark After Dark Live,” a live late-night shark show featuring celebrity guests and shark experts.

VITAC is proud to make “Shark Week” accessible to the millions of viewers who rely on captions. Be sure not to miss a thrilling (and sometimes scary) moment…turn the closed captions on!
